Maintaining your heating and air conditioning units
Proper maintenance of a heating and air conditioning systems is essential to prolong the life of the system and achieve maximum efficiency. 80% of system failures are due to lack of maintenance. Even a very thin layer of dirt on the evaporator coil can reduce the efficiency of an air conditioner by 20%. The out door component of an air conditioner is called a condenser. If dirt is allowed to build up on the fins it can substantially reduce a condensers ability to discharge the heat it removes from your home.
It is essential to have the refrigerant charge on an air conditioner maintained. When an air conditioner is low on refrigerant it can run twice as long as a properly charged system. The air conditioner normally consumes the largest amount of electricity in a home. When it runs longer then necessary due to an improper refrigerant level, it will shorten the life of the compressor and can double electricity consumption.
